A box compliant with the ISPM 15 standard is an essential element for the international transport of goods. NO-NAIL BOXES, a recognized specialist in industrial wooden packaging, offers solutions that comply with this standard, ensuring safety and compliance for international shipments.

The ISPM 15 standard, established by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), aims to limit the spread of pests through wooden packaging. For exporters, complying with this standard is essential to ensure product safety and to facilitate customs clearance. But what exactly does this standard involve, and why is it so important for the transport of your products? In this article, we answer these questions.

What is the ISPM 15 standard?

ISPM 15, or International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15, was introduced to address the challenges of globalization. With the growth of international trade, the movement of goods has unfortunately increased the risk of pests hidden in wooden packaging. To counter this risk, ISPM 15 imposes strict measures. It requires, in particular, that raw wood be treated before being used as packaging. This ensures that the wood used does not carry pests that could disrupt local ecosystems.

NO-NAIL BOXES ensures that its boxes strictly comply with these requirements, providing customers with peace of mind for their international shipments.

What are the characteristics of ISPM 15 boxes?

ISPM 15 compliant boxes are characterised by specific requirements regarding treatment, materials, and marking in order to meet international transport standards.

    Treatment

Since 2018, two types of treatment have been approved for wooden packaging materials: debarked wood with chemical treatment or with heat treatment.

    • Debarked wood with chemical treatment: the wood is first debarked and then treated either with methyl bromide or sulfuryl fluoride. These chemical treatments aim to eliminate potential pests.

Debarked wood with heat treatment: this process involves debarking followed by heat treatment, which can be applied either before or after bark removal. The treatment consists of heating the wood to ensure the elimination of harmful organisms.

    Type of packaging

Certain categories of packaging are exempt from the ISPM 15 standard, notably thin wood packaging materials (6 mm thickness or less)

and those made entirely from processed wood materials, such as plywood or particle board, which are manufactured using glue, heat, pressure, or a combination of these techniques.

  • Marking

Regarding marking, ISPM 15 compliant wooden boxes must follow strict rules. The marking includes the standard symbol, the country code, the producer code (the company responsible for the treatment), and the code of the treatment applied.

This marking must be large enough to be clearly legible to the naked eye, even from a distance, and must be placed within a rectangle or square, separated by a vertical line to distinguish the symbol from the treatment information. At NO-NAIL BOXES, this marking can be stenciled, stamped on pallet blocks, or printed directly on the box to ensure perfect clarity.

These characteristics guarantee the compliance of ISPM 15 boxes, thereby ensuring safe transport in line with international requirements.
